The SAFE Foundation is a Cardiff-based charity committed to improving the lives of some of the poorest people and communities in the world. With a variety of projects taking place in the UK and overseas, their mission is to build a fairer, brighter and peaceful future for the world.
This involves improving access to human rights; something achieved through creating opportunities for those that need them the most. Transforming lives in Britain, SAFE empower people to take control of their future, making a change to their own lives by helping others overseas. This is partly achieved through developing skills, attitudes and values.
Fostering a community of caring and responsible people, the SAFE ethos is centred on welcoming and embracing cultural diversity, values and social justice.

SAFE’s journey began in 2006, with their inspiring founder, Lucy Dickenson. Lucy spent a year volunteering in Uganda when she was 18, Lucy saw first hand how some overseas aid does not always filter down to people who are stigmatised or disengaged from civil society. She returned home with a vision of providing international aid on a smaller scale to communities in desperate need of aid. Joined by her twin sister, Hannah, the two sisters set about learning the skills and knowledge they needed to bring their vision to life.
Lucy and Hannah came together with a small and committed group of friends, who became the driving force behind SAFE. This incredible group of people later became the founding trustees and played a big part in helping The SAFE Foundation receive its official charity status in 2007.
Tragically, Lucy was killed in 2012 in a car accident when working in Zambia. Since then, Hannah has continued the legacy of her sister and has been a passionate leader of SAFE.
